JGAT - Jewish Genetic Diseases Awareness and Screening Project

Jewish Genetic Diseases Awareness and Screening Project (JGAT)

JGAT’s mandate is to educate individuals of child-bearing age to be screened for genetic diseases. They are encouraged to request the screening tests their family doctors. Some inherited diseases result when both parents silently carry the same recessive genetic trait. Now, thanks to medical advances, you can learn ways to protect your family from the devastation of certain fatal childhood diseases. A blood test can determine your carrier status of Tay-Sachs, Canavan Disease and Familial Dysautonomia.

Jewish Genetic Diseases Awareness Week was officially launched in 2010. This was a joint project of NCJWC-Toronto Section, the Department of Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics at Mount Sinai Hospital and Jacob’s Ladder.

Jewish Genetic Diseases Awareness Week 2011 will take place the week of November 14th.
