L'Chaim Cancer Support for Jewish Women
L’Chaim offers confidential peer support to Jewish women with cancer. In addition, L’Chaim raises cancer awareness through educational programs for both its members and the community.
All L’Chaim volunteers are Jewish women cancer survivors trained to provide peer support to newly diagnosed women.
SERVICES:
The L'Chaim Hotline: Provides an empathetic ear to newly diagnosed patients and may refer clients on to the "Matchmaker" for the Telephone Buddy Network or to other agencies as needed.
Mailing List: Clients receive mailings about L’Chaim programs/social gatherings, if so desired.
The Telephone Buddy Network: Matches newly diagnosed clients with volunteers who have had similar cancer experiences. Effort is also made to also match according to age and interests.
Gift Bags: Bags are delivered to new clients, containing items to bring strength, comfort and valuable information to help cope with cancer treatment. Items include:
§ The L’Chaim produced DVD “What Every Jewish Woman Should Know about Cancer”
§ DVD entitled “Finding Your Way” “starring” other cancer patients who share how they cope
§ CD entitled "Calming the Mind and Body - Meditations for Coping with Cancer"
§ A pamphlet from the Jewish Chaplains of Ontario – non-denominational – to provide comfort and inspiration for both patients and their families
§ Info on genetic testing and the BRCA1 and 2 cancer-causing genes, more common among Ashkenazi Jewish women
§ Info on financial aid, counseling and other valuable services from Jewish agencies
§ Info on Jewish traditions that can bring comfort during times of stress and illness
§ A guide to general resources for cancer patients in the
Programs for members and clients:
§ Therapeutic programs such as music and art therapy and stress management
§ Educational programs on topics such as nutrition, osteoporosis and lymphedema
Social Gatherings: Periodic social events, such as a yearly Chanukah party, where volunteers and clients can “mix, mingle and schmooze” in a relaxed atmosphere.
Community-Wide Cancer Awareness Events: Presentation of important informational evenings to raise cancer awareness.
Speakers' Bureau: Provides speakers for other community groups to raise cancer awareness.
